From Heaven to Earth - Divinity, Humanity, and Nature in the Ancient Near East
The organisers of the 12th annual Oxford Postgraduate Conference in Assyriology warmly invite all UK, European, and overseas students whose research relates to the ancient world (including Assyriology and Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology as well as Anatolian Studies, Biblical Studies, Classics, and Egyptology) to join us in Oxford for a two-day conference at the Ioannou Centre on 3-4 April 2024 on the theme:
From Heaven to Earth - Divinity, Humanity, and Nature in the Ancient Near East
The main aim of the conference is to provide a forum for students at the postgraduate level to present their research to a group of peers and establish connections across disciplinary and geographical borders.The theme intends to encourage dialogue about the ways in which ancient peoples conceived of the relationship between humans, the gods, and the natural world. Papers might but need not relate to the following topics:
Conceptions of Human Nature
Ecocritical and environmental approaches to the ancient world
Boundaries between the divine, natural, and human world
Natural disaster in the Ancient Near East
Taming the natural world
Depictions of the divine and natural realms in art and literature
The abstract submission deadline is 1 February 2024. Please submit your proposed paper title and a brief abstract (250 words) to opcaassyriology@gmail.com. Papers are to be 20 minutes followed by a plenary panel discussion.
We intend to provide a limited number of bursaries for travel and accommodation for participants attending from outside of the UK. More information will be provided about the number of bursaries and the application process for a bursary in due course.
